'Dumb Money' trailer teases the wild true story of Reddit's r/WallStreetBets saga

Paul Dano as RoaringKitty, a young white man in front of a home computer and microphone setup.

Dumb Money looks set to do for the Gamestop meme stock saga what The Big Short did for the subprime mortgage crisis.

Paul Dano plays Keith Gill, the investor and analyst known on the subreddit r/wallstreetbets as u/DeepFuckingValue and on other platforms as RoaringKitty, who was a key figure in driving the "people powered" boom in GameStop's share value. The trailer jumps between the Gill family, other incredulous Reddit investors, and the hedge-fund jerks who were losing billions as ordinary folk made life-changing millions... and then lost it.

The film also features Shailene Woodley as Gill's wife Caroline, Seth Rogen as Melvin Capital owner Gabe Plotkin, as well as Nick Offerman, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, and plenty more familiar faces, including Sebastian "Bucky Barnes" Stan as Robinhood honcho Vlad Tenev. It's directed by Craig Gillespie, who also brought you I, Tonya — so there's a non-zero chance of Margot Robbie explaining what a short squeeze is in a bathtub, right?

Dumb Money is in theaters Sept. 22.
